Inspiration of Maurice Ashley

Here is a link to a piece published in the Trinidad & Tobago Tribune

Inspiration of Maurice Ashley
by Carl Jacobs:

Maurice Ashley was born in Jamaica on March 6, 1966, and 33 years later, became the first Black chess grandmaster in the history of the game. That feat alone sets him apart, but it is not simply what he has achieved over the chessboard but also what he has, in turn, contributed to the sport that makes the Afro-American a truly inspirational figure. Coming from the English-speaking Caribbean, an area that has yet to produce a home-grown GM of its own, Ashley and his exceptional chess career should command the interest not only of chess lovers but also of a majority of the regional population. He may well be regarded, in fact, as a role model for any sport, an example of persistent striving to realise a dream and the helping of others, at the same time, to achieve theirs.
